Minister cuts the ribbon on new Tralee Northern Relief Road
The Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD has officially opened several infrastructure, recreation and travel projects in Kerry. Accompanied by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Mikey Sheehy, the minister officially opened the first sections of the South Kerry Greenway in Glenbeigh this morning.
This afternoon, Minister O’Brien and Minister Norma Foley performed the official opening of the first section of the Tralee Northern Relief Road at Listellick while Minister O’Brien also opened two Active Travel Schemes in Killarney and safety improvement works outside schools in Tralee and Killorglin.
The third section of the South Kerry Greenway to be opened within the past six months was opened to the public at the beginning of June and means that almost 10km of the walking and cycling amenity is now in use.
Speaking during his visit to Kerry, Minister O’Brien said: ‘I am delighted to be in County Kerry today for the formal opening of several schemes that will improve transport infrastructure for those living in and visiting this beautiful county. My Department is committed to funding improvements to both active travel infrastructure and the roads network across the southwest.
‘We have allocated nearly €50 million this year to projects that will improve connectivity between the region and other parts of the country and make every-day travel safer. I am also pleased to see progress on the South Kerry Greenway. This has created significant employment during its construction, and I look forward to the further economic opportunities that this world class Greenway will create in the Iveragh Peninsula,’ said Mr O’Brien.
In Tralee, Minister O’Brien cut the ribbon on the new 1.25km road which runs between the R556 Abbeydorney Road (at Listellick) and the Forge Cross Roundabout on the R878 and provides a link to the Munster Technological University and to the Tralee Bypass. The project commenced construction in early 2025 and has been funded by the Department of Transport.
In Killarney, the new Active Travel Schemes at Park Road and Rock Road provide a shared and segregated walkway/cycleway creating safer, healthier and more sustainable transport options for residents and visitors. The schemes are funded and supported by the National Transport Authority.
The Safe Routes to School projects for Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin and at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in Tralee, which are funded by the National Transport Authority, provide essential active travel infrastructure which provides safer and healthier travel options for students.
Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Mikey Sheehy said: ‘I was honoured to welcome Minister Darragh O’Brien to Kerry today to officially open these important infrastructural improvements for the county. Kerry County Council is working closely with the Department of Transport to deliver new amenities, safety improvements and new roads infrastructure which benefit locals and visitors and alike. This was a very important day for better and safer transport and recreation in the county.’
