Minister of State at the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage with special responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan TD, visited the Tralee Bay Wetlands Ecology Park and Activity Centre on Friday, 22nd May. The ministerial visit followed his official opening of the landmark Kerry Biodiversity Conference 2026 at Munster Technological University (MTU) Tralee.

Minister O’Sullivan was welcomed by the park’s management and staff alongside Minister for Education Norma Foley TD, Councillor Anne O’Sullivan, and senior executives from Kerry County Council. The delegation highlighted the centre’s vital role as a regional hub for environmental conservation, outdoor learning, and community engagement.

The group—which included representatives from Fáilte Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), and local climate action group Transition Kerry—convened at the top of the park’s iconic 20-metre viewing & observation tower. This vantage point overlooks Tralee Bay, which is designated as a protected Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

During the visit, the delegation discussed the park’s function as a premier resource for ecological education and biodiversity awareness in the South West. The event showcased how local communities, educational institutions, and state bodies can collaborate effectively to protect natural heritage and drive meaningful environmental action across County Kerry.

The gathering also underscored a shared commitment among national, local, and academic partners to expand research, sustainable ecotourism, and future environmental initiatives in the region.
