THE ‘See Something, Say Something’ campaign, which was launched in July, has led to an increase of 10% in reports on anti-social behaviour incidents in Tralee, leading to an additional 11 arrests, 10 prosecutions and 2 house searches in the first eight weeks.

The first set of figures has been released and Sgt. Tim O’Keeffe of Tralee Garda Station said; “in total over the first eight weeks we received 158 reports relating to 103 separate incidents in Tralee, and most of these incidents would previously have gone unreported.”

Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber Alliance, which spearheaded the campaign, said; “The first set of results have already proved the value of the See Something, Say Something campaign. Over the summer months there was a noticeable improvement on the streets of Tralee, it certainly had an impact in improving the atmosphere in the town centre”.

The pilot has been widely supported by members of the public, business community and Kerry County Council, with signage and online campaigns to raise awareness of See Something, Say Something.

“The text based campaign has been wholeheartedly welcomed by the Gardai in Tralee, and we consider it a very valuable tool in supporting the people in Tralee, with over 92% of texts being responded to,” said Sgt Tim O’Keeffe.

During this trial period, the Gardai are also examining the system internally to ensure that their response times are improved upon.

“Because of limitations in our own resources, we weren’t in a position to respond to all the messages within a timeframe we ourselves are satisfied with, however we are learning and adapting what we do in the station, and are looking at our own resources to respond faster” according to Tim O’Keeffe.

Ken Tobin said; “Because of the early successes from the trial, we have fielded calls in the Chamber from other towns around Ireland over the past couple of months, that have expressed an interest in the system, and we are actively supporting the provider of the system Zinmobi, who are a Tralee based technology company, to further develop the system with a view to rolling it out around Ireland”
